Editor's Verdict: Tucked away in the corner of the main site, you'd think that WHSmith were trying to keep their DVD and game rental service a secret. Unfortunately for them, they provide a good enough service that we here at No1Reviews.com consider it our duty to expose this secret! Despite belonging to the far larger, and more diverse parent-company, WHSmith has adhered to normal online-rental convention, making renting titles over the internet a painlessly easy way to get your gaming fix. Much like the majority of other popular game-rental sites, WHSmith Movies Direct's service uses the list format. You simply browse through the site, searching for titles that you want to rent, clicking 'Rent Now', and they are automatically added to your wishlist. Depending on the title's availability, your membership package, and the 'priority' you have given each title, WHSmith immediately dispatches one, two, or three titles to you from your wishlist via first-class post. As there are no due dates, you are able to keep each title as long as you want, and when you feel like returning one or more of your titles, you simply put it back into its pre-paid envelope, and send it back to WHSmith. The returning of the games are also by first-class delivery, and as soon as WHSmith Movies Direct receive your game, they'll dispatch another title from your list, and free up a slot. WHSmith have learned from the best, and not only provide a huge selection of console games for a myriad of different platforms, including the latest Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo Wii games, but also allow online game-rental users access to their library of over 60,000 movies. This simply staggering number of movies greatly adds to your choice and enhances the service, thanks to the sheer diversity it gives you. As a part of the combination packages that all game-rental memberships consist of, you are able to mix in any proportion of DVDs with your game rentals, allowing you to enjoy a change every now and again, in between the gaming adventures, letting you go from the latest blockbuster games, to the latest blockbuster films, seamlessly. Their first-class postage and excellent customer service allows for a smooth operation, despite the irritatingly extended sign-up process. The WHSmith Movies Direct website itself, does not contain the majority of extra features that some other rental sites offer. Despite being a part of a larger whole, the website is largely uncomplex and minimalist, which, although taking away from the brand-name of WHSmith somewhat, does allow for a more simple and easy way to navigate and find the titles you want. The search system is easy to use, consisting of a simple text box, and the option to limit your searches by games, DVDs, actors, directors and title. As your search results, you receive a list, accompanied by thumbnails of titles that match your criteria, with the 'rent now' button next to a brief description, making adding titles to your lists an easy affair. If you do not want to search but simply wish to surf the website in order to locate potential titles, you can also browse by platform and genre. There is no real member area offered, other than the list view, where you can add or remove titles from your wishlist, as well as adjust their priorities, but they have a number of lists on sidebars, showing collections of recommended films sorted by categories such as "Did you miss," and "Cops and Robbers," which enhances the browsing experience, but they do not provide the same kinds of lists for games, which is unfortunate. The major downfall of the WHSmith Movies Direct rental service in the eyes of a gamer, is the focusing on the film aspect of the service, and the near neglect, in all but the minimal amounts of specifically Game-based content. WHSmith could do well to expand their game title catalogue, and provide more game content for users, such as more top-lists and release news. Ideally, WHSmith Movies Direct would also offer slightly cheaper, games-only membership packages, that allowed the user to choose whether he or she wants access to films or not. Fortunately, WHSmith Movies Direct seem to be taking a step in the right direction, and are planning to expand their service, by providing more titles, and even offering a 'keep it' service, where you will be able to obtain games for fractions of their original prices if you really do enjoy renting it, so watch this space!
